Too Hot for the Beach? 7 Cool Indoor Activities in Ocean County, NJ

Everyone loves a Jersey Shore summer…until the sand is scorching, the UV index is off the charts, and it's simply too hot to spend another afternoon baking on the beach.

Fortunately, Ocean County has plenty of fun indoor activities that let you stay cool while still making the most of your day. Whether you're entertaining the kids, planning a date, or just looking for something different, here are some of my favorite places to escape the heat.

1. Supreme Courts – One of Ocean County's Best Places to Beat the Summer Heat

When the beach is packed and the temperatures climb into the 90s, one of my favorite places to spend the afternoon is Supreme Courts in Toms River.

The facility offers spacious, air-conditioned indoor pickleball courts where players of every skill level can enjoy the fastest-growing sport in America. Whether you're trying pickleball for the first time, joining an open play session, taking a lesson, or playing competitively, there's something happening nearly every day.

During the summer, Supreme Courts also offers special events including teen nights, team challenges, clinics, and leagues, making it a great destination for families, friends, and visitors looking for something active to do indoors.

Not a pickleball player? You can also join one of their indoor cycling (spin) classes or simply relax and recharge.

Before you leave, stop by Low Tide Smoothie Co., located inside the facility, for a fresh smoothie or healthy snack. It's the perfect way to cool down after a workout.

Why I recommend it: It combines fitness, fun, great people, and air-conditioning—all under one roof. On those days when the Jersey Shore heat becomes overwhelming, it's hard to think of a better place to spend a few hours.

2. Beat the Heat at the Boardwalk Arcades

Sometimes the best beach day starts by stepping inside.

Both Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant Beach offer classic boardwalk arcades packed with modern video games, pinball, skee-ball, basketball, claw machines, and prize games. Spend an hour (or three) enjoying a little friendly competition while staying comfortably air conditioned.

Perfect for:

  • Families, rainy afternoons, date nights, group outings

3. Back Nine Golf – Play Golf Without the Heat

You don't have to wait for cooler weather to work on your golf game.

Back Nine Golf on Fischer Boulevard in Toms River features state-of-the-art golf simulators that let you play famous courses from around the world in air-conditioned comfort.

Whether you're serious about improving your swing or just looking for something fun to do with friends, it's an easy way to spend an afternoon indoors.

4. Fun Bags Indoor Cornhole

Looking for something a little different?

Fun Bags Indoor Cornhole on Route 37 in Toms River has created one of Ocean County's most unique indoor entertainment venues.

Gather a few friends, enjoy some friendly competition, and see why cornhole has become one of America's fastest-growing recreational sports.

It's relaxed, social, and a great alternative when outdoor activities become uncomfortable.

5. Solve an Escape Room

If your family enjoys puzzles and teamwork, check out East Coast Escape Room in Toms River. Choose from several themed adventures where you'll work together to solve clues before time runs out. It's a great option for families, teens, couples, and groups looking for something interactive.

6. Jump, Climb & Play at Urban Air

For families with energetic kids (or adults who are kids at heart), Urban Air Adventure Park in Toms River offers trampolines, climbing walls, obstacle courses, and plenty of indoor excitement—all in a climate-controlled environment.

7. Explore Ocean County's Museums

Need a slower-paced afternoon?

Consider visiting:

  • Ocean County Historical Museum
  • Insectropolis — the Bug Museum
  • Tuckerton Seaport Museum

They're fun, educational, and perfect when you're looking for something beyond the beach.

My Local Tip

One of the things I love about living in Ocean County is that there's always something to do—even when the weather doesn't cooperate.

Whether you're escaping an afternoon thunderstorm, taking a break from the beach, or simply trying to stay cool during a heat wave, these local businesses offer a great way to enjoy summer indoors.

After all... the Jersey Shore isn't just about the beach.

It's about enjoying everything our communities have to offer.
